Product Details

Jrgen Magnussen for Peder Pedersen, chest of drawers, pine, lacquered iron, Denmark, circa 1957

This chest of drawers (ca. 1957), designed by Jrgen Magnussen, and crafted by the acclaimed Peder Pedersen studio, is a distinguished example of Scandinavian modernism. Magnussen's design exemplifies the postwar Scandinavian pursuit of democratic design; pieces that were accessible, practical, and aesthetically enduring. This piece originally belonged to Jrgen Magnussens personal home, where it was accompanied by other furniture sharing the same unmistakable style.

The chest of drawers has a rectilinear, box-like form with a strong horizontal emphasis. Its proportions are well-balanced, with a sturdy yet elegant stance. The front is characterized by eight evenly spaced, linear drawers that run the full width of the piece. Each drawer is punctuated by small, round wooden knobs, symmetrically positioned in pairs, which subtly break the uniformity without disrupting the clean lines. By preventing the piece from feeling too visually heavy, the designer elevated the chest on a black lacquered iron base with open space beneath it. Constructed from pine, a material favored in Nordic design, the piece embodies a warm and organic character.
PP Mbler is a highly respected Danish furniture manufacturer, celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to quality. Established in 1953 by brothers Ejnar and Lars Peder Pedersen, the company started as a small 150 m workshop in Allerd, Denmark. Over the decades, it has expanded significantly, now operating from an 1800 m facility while staying true to its original location.

From the beginning, PP Mbler collaborated with influential designers and artisans, including Finn Juhl and Hans J. Wegner. One of their early contributions was crafting the lower frame for Wegner's famous "Teddy Bear Chair" for A.P. Stolen.

At the heart of PP Mblers philosophy is an unwavering commitment to superior craftsmanship. A well-known story illustrates this dedication: when Wegner once suggested that the hidden parts of a chair didnt require the same level of precision, Ejnar Pedersen insisted that every detail, seen or unseen, should be crafted to perfection: both to honor the artisans' skill and uphold the companys high standards.

Today, under the leadership of the third generation, PP Mbler continues to produce both classic and modern designs, seamlessly blending traditional woodworking techniques with contemporary technology. Their legacy remains deeply rooted in Danish design, ensuring their pieces endure for generations to come.
Kindly note that the piece is in good, used condition with some signs of use. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
